    The Enterprise Mobile Computing (EMC) group within Zebra Technologies is focused on developing highly innovative mobile computing systems and solutions that will be deployed to market-leading customers world-wide. Systems Engineers (SEs) are responsible for clearly defining and communicating innovative engineering solutions to complex customer problems, and then managing the realization of those solutions through the engineering processes and into customer deployment.


    Role Description

    The SW Platform Systems Engineer will be responsible for defining and driving the evolution of current and next generation mobile computing Platforms including software, hardware, and customer solutions.

    The successful candidate will use technology, market and customer trends to develop and define new features and product concepts for the platform, they will assess the technical capabilities of the platform in support of Operating Systems and applications to fully utilize new technologies and innovate solutions to currently unsolvable problems. In addition, the SW Platform SE will lead architectural analysis of solutions, and will coordinate feasibility studies and design tradeoffs among the Engineering, Product Management, Software Architecture, and Program Management stakeholders.

    The SW Platform SE will be responsible for working within an agile development process, decomposing and clearly communicating solutions into executable features and stories, monitoring and tracking their progress, and ensuring overall solution reliability, quality, and ultimately customer satisfaction.


    • The scope of SW Platform Systems Engineering responsibilities will include:

      • Collaborating with Portfolio Management, Product Management and Customers in applying the Use Cases, the Device and Solution to the Platform behavior and definition;
      • Working closely with the Product Management team and with the Solutions Architecture team to refine Use Cases using structured methodologies and capturing them in an engineering Requirements management tool (Siemens Polarion);
      • Support the Agile SAFE model by decomposing Portfolio Epics into Product Capabilities and Solution Features;
      • Providing overall technical leadership and guidance across Electrical, RF, Mechanical, and Software Engineering functions:
      • Owning Platform and Product Requirements Specifications
      • Creating System Level architecture for the product family, including defining the hardware and software feature requirements
      • Investigating Operating Systems considerations / capabilities
      • Defining and managing Competitive Benchmarking products and measurements
      • Understanding and documenting Compatibility and Interoperability
      • Updating Master Test Strategy and reviewing Verification Plans
      • Reviewing Program schedules and budgets
      • Driving Technical issues and risks management
      • Managing and reporting on Customer-Facing Attributes (CFAs) and Critical Parameter (CP) Testing
      • Tracking and Reporting on the product BOM
      • Supporting Defect and Issue Management Tracking using Atlassian JIRA


      • Bachelors of Science Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Engineering Science; Masters preferred.
      • 5 – 10 years of experience with specification definition and engineering development of computing platforms and architectures.
      • 3+ years leading globally distributed cross functional product development teams, especially in wireless or mobile computing applications, with in-depth knowledge of key elements such as Operating Systems, processors, displays, radios, and batteries.
      • Demonstrated capability of applying systems engineering analysis and modeling methods.
      • Strong software aptitude and experience including:
      • application and driver development in mobile OS environments (Android, WinMo, WinCE);
      • device endpoint security, multi-factor authentication, anti-virus, biometrics, secure computer architectures and certificate and key management;
      • networking protocols: TCP/IP, UDP, FTP, VPNs, client/server and network management;
      • experience with WWAN (LTE, UMTS, GSM/CDMA), WLAN (802.11a/b/g/n, 802.11i, 802.1x, CCX), and Bluetooth, including security protocols.
      • Prior experience working in an Agile development team.
      • Highly self-motivated individual with the ability to effectively present to senior leadership.
      • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills with ability to positively influence and persuade highly technical associates.
      • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both in person and over the phone/online.
      • Experience working in a global organization with geographically distributed teams.
