  • Overview

    The Product Safety Compliance Engineer applies a wide range of specialized Engineering skills to obtain, maintain and document regulatory/agency approvals and compliance certifications for Zebra printer products.  This individual serves as a resource to the Engineering staff during product development and provides technical direction with respect to Product Safety design issues.  Provides assessments and clarification of codes and standards to project teams.  This position also manages Zebra’s internal safety lab including the yearly certification of the lab facility with outside agency.


    Responsible for all aspects of Zebra’s product safety compliance process for the purposes of obtaining and maintaining agency approvals, compliance to international codes & standards, emerging standards and worldwide safety certification of Zebra printer products. 

    • Responsible for assessing the application of codes & standards to new product developments and 3rd party designs to obtain and maintain the agency certifications specified by Zebra design requirements.
    • Remains current and knowledgeable of all domestic/international agencies and compliance standards applicable to Zebra products.
    • Conducts Product Safety reviews in cooperation with New Product Development, Product Management and Corporate Quality. Participates in product design reviews.
    • Prepares plans and procedures to support the design verification/validation testing performed by project teams. Provides hands-on product safety testing. Keeps management informed of problems and progress through regular status reports.
    • Capable of performing and training internal resources in a variety of European Normal or IEC international product safety compliance tests
    • Performs, monitors, analyzes and publishes the results of product compliance tests. Evaluates test results and makes design change recommendations.
    • Develops, implements and maintains an appropriate level of operating procedures, policies and standards necessary to support the internal product safety lab and all product safety testing
    • Serves on new product development teams representing a Compliance Engineering or technical specialty.
    • Escorts/assists on-site agency inspections, resolves variances and reviews/maintains inspection documentation.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Agile and other database report generation
    • Preparation of certification samples
    • Generating testing automation tools to support product safety testing where appropriate
    • Generate product safety test plans, procedures, work instructions, etc.
    • Perform Safety testing within the prescribed schedules, documenting all tests including taking photographs of all test setups and generating all agency reports in support of certification filing.
    • Supporting, troubleshooting and investigation of any safety out of spec conditions
    • Performs other duties as assigned


    • BSEE or equivalent with 6 or more years demonstrated experience doing product safety design evaluations and testing. (not just sending product to an agency lab for evaluation)
    • 6 or more years demonstrated experience and expertise in achieving worldwide regulatory requirements relating to IT and light industrial products (NRTL, CSA, CB Scheme European low voltage, ETC.)
    • Experience managing global product safety approvals
    • Experienced developing and executing product safety test plans using in-house facilities and third party laboratories.
    • Knowledge of effective printed circuit board layout practices, specifically related to product safety design
    • Excellent analytical/interpersonal skills including communication, collaboration, negotiation
    • Must have a proven track record of developing requirements, maintaining program momentum and achieving scheduled project commitments
    • Must be flexible, self-motivated and self-directed and comfortable working in fast paced environment
    • Proficient with MS office tools
    • Must have experience using product safety test equipment, Hy-Pot equipment, current probes, o’scopes, power meters, ground fault equipment, electronic loads
    • Working knowledge of safety standard IEC60950
