Overview

The Custom Products Group within Enterprise Mobile Computing (EMC), operating under the Enterprise Visibility and Mobility (EVM) Division of Zebra Technologies Solutions, customizes solutions based on our industry leading Mobile Computing portfolio to meet specific customer needs in their mission critical applications.

Our product development teams are globally distributed and Systems Engineers (SEs) will take the lead role in complex custom product development activities with both local and remote teams.

Role Description

Systems Engineers (SEs) in Zebra will provide technical leadership in the development of mobile computing Hardware (i.e. electronic circuits and mechanical enclosures), Software, and Solutions.

They will use market and customer trends to guide the development of product concepts, will lead architectural analysis of solutions, and will coordinate feasibility studies and design tradeoffs among the Engineering, Product Management and Program Management stakeholders.

Also, SEs will be responsible for capturing the custom solution, system, and product requirements, for monitoring their verification, and for assurance of overall solution reliability.

Scope of Responsibilities

The scope of Systems Engineering responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with Product Management and the Customer in defining the Use Cases and in defining the Device and Solution implementations; this might include participation in Customer site visits;
  • Working closely with the Product Management team, the respective Standard Architecture team as well as any potential third-parties to refine Use Cases using structured methodologies and capturing them in the engineering database tool called Polarion;
  • Providing overall technical leadership across Electrical, RF, Mechanical, and Software Engineering functions driving, or participating in, the following:
  • Custom Product Requirements Specifications
  • System Level architecture for the product family, including defining the hardware and software feature requirements
  • Operating Systems considerations
  • Compatibility and Interoperability
  • Master Verification Plans
  • Technical issues and risks management
  • Managing and reporting on Customer-Facing Attributes (CFAs) and Critical Parameter (CP) Testing
  • Defect and Issue Management Tracking using JIRA
  • In addition to the technical responsibilities listed above, this role will also take the lead in managing the CPG engineering processes, and work on process improvements.

Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Specific Knowledge / Skills:

  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Engineering Science; Masters preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience with specification and development of computing platforms and architectures.
  • 2+ years leading cross functional product development teams, especially in wireless or mobile computing applications, with in-depth knowledge of key elements such as touch panels, displays, radios, and batteries.
  • Demonstrated capability of applying systems engineering analysis and modeling methods.
  • Proven ability to handle the multiple engineering disciplines within a single project.
  • A very valuable asset is a background including experience with:
  • experience with WWAN (LTE, UMTS, GSM/CDMA), WLAN (802.11a/b/g/n, 802.11i, 802.1x, CCX), and Bluetooth, including security protocols.
  • Highly self-motivated individual with the ability to effectively present to senior leads within the EMC organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills with ability to positively influence and persuade highly technical associates.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both in person and over the phone/online.
  • Experience working in a global organization with geographically distributed teams that spans multiple disciplines.
  • Detail oriented with ability to work autonomously.
