  • Overview

    The Intellectual Property (IP) Group of the Legal Department is a specialized legal team that protects Zebra’s IP by building, maintaining, and managing strategic patent and trademark portfolios, worldwide, by partnering with key stakeholders to actively harvest, capture and identify IP throughout Zebra. Additionally, the IP Group provides legal counseling to business units of Zebra in the areas of confidential information protection, contractual agreements involving IP, marketing material review, freedom to operate studies, and IP enforcement guidance.


    The IP Legal Assistant supports Zebra in-house Patent Counsel, the Director of Patents and Technology, and the Chief Intellectual Property Officer in efforts to strategically grow and maintain Zebra’s IP portfolio. The IP Legal Assistant leads the processing of communications received from governmental entities and outside counsel to populate internal systems, including a patent docketing system, thereby enabling the IP Group to efficiently prepare and prosecution patent applications, worldwide, in a timely manner.


    The IP Legal Assistant uses initiative and discretion in accomplishing assignments, supports team projects, and relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish work goals. The IP Legal Assistant assists attorneys in areas of responsibility by providing information on applicable rules of various governmental entities, such as patent office procedural requirements.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Opens matters in internal systems, including billing system and patent docketing system;
    • Dockets due dates associated with patent preparation and prosecution action items;
    • Populates patent docketing system with documentation received from various patent offices;
    • Drafts instructional letters, subject to attorney review, directed to outside counsel in connection with foreign patent filings;
    • Files patent applications and patent prosecution materials with appropriate governmental entities;
    • Interacts with outside counsel, internal business partners, and service providers to foster relationships and ensure that matters are being handled in a timely and competent manner;
    • Assists attorneys and others in meeting and managing deadlines, including assuring deliverables are made in a timely and coordinated manner consistent with patent office rules; and
    • Prepares reports and other documents for attorneys and Chief Intellectual Property Officer, as needed.


    Job Requirements:

    Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred.

    Preferred Work Experience:

    • 3-5 years of experience in a legal office or in-house counsel setting; IP legal experience preferred but not required


    Key Skills and Competencies:           

    • Unquestioned ethics and integrity;
    • Experience with Anaqua or similar patent docketing system (preferred, but not required);
    • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information;
    • Willingness to bring issues to light, ask questions, and escalate issues when necessary;
    • Strong professional communication skills;
    • Participates as a team player both within and outside the Legal Department;
    • Ability to learn inner workings of corporate business units/ functions, as it relates to his/her area(s) of responsibilities;

    • Exercises initiative to solve issues.
