    Zebra Technologies Enterprise Mobile Computing has an immediate opening for a Director of Mechanical Engineering focused on Advanced Development and Special Projects.  This person will drive continuous improvement efforts through lean initiatives in engineering, manufacturing, planning, and supplier development.  These initiatives will develop a culture of awareness throughout Zebra Technologies engineering, manufacturing, quality and supply chain teams and extend to JDM manufacturing and their Tier 1 suppliers.  They will ensure a culture of Business Excellence through the design and implementation of new technologies and mechanical stack up architecture resulting in financial benefit and/or improved customer satisfaction.  Finally, this person will ensure the use of high-quality equipment and materials, and that production standards are met by working with manufacturing engineering and supply chain to meet customer’s product expectations in the most cost-effective manner.

    Responsibilities

    Oversee studies into new mechanical architectures and technologies to push our products to continue to be competitive as the lines between consumer products and enterprise products continue to blur.  Develop a deep understanding of what makes Zebra products stand out in the enterprise space and answer the needs of our customers. Use problem solving skills and DFx principles to develop these new technologies to keep our products competitive in an ever-evolving space of user needs and advancements such as 5G. Oversee of the team and processes that will insure smooth transition of these technologies into production designs, including critical detailed design reviews and use of DFMEA, PFMEA, DFFA, and other DFx principles.  Develop first and second tier suppliers to ensure technologies are well-integrated and use a lesson-learned process to ensure continuous improvement.  As this team will be formed of direct senior personnel and rotational assignments, it will be used from time to time to lead or support Tiger Team efforts to solve critical issues.  The team will also be involved in development of process and tools improvement to ensure mechanical engineering remains agile and current with industry practices.

     

    Ensure that all new technology and/or architecture strategies have risk assessments that are addressed by:

    • Relevant design simplification and design improvements
    • Correct technology and process assessments along with supplier selection that meets the goals of the design intent
    • Correct Tolerance Analysis and design for process capability studies
    • Design for cost analysis, including process breakdown cost analysis and competitor product analysis
    • Manufacturing Service and Repair DFM/DFS analysis
    • 2D dimensional drawing review, specifically critical dimensions driven from TA requirements and process control Cpk dimensioning
    • Critical Component Qualification processes, including 3D laser scans, FAI and Cpk assessments
    • Control plans for all critical assemblies, guided by relevant actions from DFx documentation
    • Supplier and Manufacturing yield and capacity reporting and corrective action plans
    • Deployment of a set of documentation processes and tool(s), that provides traceable revision control of all key documents and necessary change control procedures.

    By working closely with the senior leadership team, this role serves as a change agent, internal consultant, and mentor. Interaction with leadership should stimulate thinking by posing new ways of doing things and challenge conventional wisdom where our products and end customers will benefit from these efforts.   It will also demonstrate successful application of Lean Design and Manufacturing principles and ensure we maximize the technologies that are serving our customers well.  Implement current and new business activities by developing plans, process documentation, and strategies to meet customer requirements while supporting internal regulatory, and validation.  Monitor quality improvement and capacity planning at existing or new facilities, as may be required to support business objectives.  Ensure that Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are defined, reported, and monitored by all departments.


    Management Responsibilities


    Strategic, tactical, and operational planning (12 + months) for the function or department;
    Direct budgetary responsibility for one or more departments, functions or major projects/programs;
    Interpret and execute policies for departments/projects;
    Recommend and implement new policies or modifications to existing policies and processes.
    Hiring staff, recommending pay increases, conducting performance reviews, training and development of staff, estimating personnel needs, assigning work, meeting completion dates, interpreting and ensuring consistent application of organizational policies. 

    Some travel will be required as the EMC ME team is global and visits to first and second tier suppliers will be necessary.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's in ME or EE with 10+ years.
    • Master's degree in an appropriate engineering discipline preferred.
    • 10+ years engineering experience
    • Transform your knowledge into solutions that solve customers’ problems. 
    • Work cross functionally with suppliers and other engineering groups to understand what technologies are coming.
    • Understands new mechanical architectures and technologies and how to push our products to continue to be competitive as the lines between consumer products and enterprise products continue to blur.
    • Focus and build networks with supplier network groups and convince them to take on new technologies.
    • Capable of driving continuous improvement efforts through lean initiatives in engineering, manufacturing, planning, and supplier development.
    • Should have exceptional leadership experience of a high-performance team.
    • Must have an aptitude for driving these new developments into projects and coordinate the support teams beyond engineering required to take these efforts into products.
    • Must be a hard-working professional who has a desire to work for a fast-paced, corporate organization.
